i apologise for jumping the gun and causing the confusion. I saw the report of cyano algae and was interested to see where and when. I was going to leave it as azollla and hence didnt put it in the main board. please accept the appologies of a fish ecologist.

I also saw this earlier in passing –9 hours ago this morning– during comments appearing in the web front page Discussion section of recent comments,
and thought these two photographs show plentiful evidence for genus identification and zero evidences for species identification.

I thought Azolla filiculoides and A. rubra were separate species, being found in North America and Australia respectively. Australian material used to be named A. filiculoides until detailed study (DNA ?) showed it was different, hence older references in Australia to A. filiculoides are really A. rubra.

I agree about leaving the sighting at Genus level: need a close-up photo showing structure of frond to ID to species.

I disagree, this could also be the similarly red A.pinnata. I would suggest leaving this species Identified at genus level.
